Greater Manchester has become a natural UK base for American companies across key sectors, with global leaders establishing significant operations throughout the city region.
The investments, including global gaming companies and major consumer brands, span Advanced Manufacturing and Low Carbon, Financial, Professional and Business Services, Creative, Digital and Tech, and Life Sciences.
Manchester was recently ranked the best-performing UK city outside London for attracting foreign direct investment projects in 2024, for the third time in five years, reinforcing the city region’s growing international appeal.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “Greater Manchester is proud of its strong relationship with the United States. Nearly 800 jobs have been created by US companies over the past year, meaning real opportunities for people across the city region, delivering the high-quality jobs and growth for our communities. Our recent trade missions to Texas and New York have been vital in strengthening our relationship with American businesses, demonstrating what our city region has to offer as a UK and European gateway. It’s fantastic to see that American companies share the same vision – recognising that Greater Manchester offers the talent, connectivity and ambition they need to succeed in the UK market.”
Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority portfolio lead for economy, business and inclusive growth, said: “Greater Manchester’s economy continues to go from strength to strength, with these substantial US investments showing the confidence international businesses have in our city region and reflecting the strong relationships we’ve built. Recent trade missions to the US have played an important role in deepening these partnerships, allowing us to engage directly with American companies and highlight first-hand why Greater Manchester is the right choice for their expansion. They are attracted by our diverse, resilient economy and skilled workforce, which provides the perfect foundation to establish and expand their UK operations. We look forward to welcoming more American businesses to Manchester.”
Joe Manning, Managing Director at MIDAS, Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency, said: “The significant investment from the United States in the last 12 months, creating close to 800 jobs and £42.6 million in GVA, reflects our strong partnerships with US companies and Greater Manchester’s thriving economy. American companies choose our city region because we offer exceptional talent, world-class infrastructure, a great business ecosystem and a quality of life that helps them attract and retain a talented workforce. These results show that Greater Manchester is firmly established as the UK’s leading destination for US investment outside of London.”
